Lingo24 is one of the six regional finalists for Scotland and Northern Ireland as part of HSBC’s Business Thinking programme. And as a finalist, Lingo24’s founder and CEO Christian Arno is heading off to Istanbul this week on a Thought Exchange trip.
And what better time for Lingo24 to launch a new Turkish microsite? This is yet another string to Lingo24’s multilingual bow, meaning our website is now available in seventeen languages.
But what opportunities does Turkey represent for businesses online? Well, for starters it’s one of the top twenty most populated countries in the world, and Istanbul is the world’s fifth largest city proper with over twelve million people.
Moreover, Turkish people like being online. After the UK, Turkey has the most people on Facebook in Europe. And the percentage of Turkish people online has more than doubled over the past four years, with over thirty million Turks now connecting regularly to the Cyber Highway.
The Turkish economy is well developed, and is one of the world’s leading producers of agricultural products, motor vehicles, consumer electronics and home appliances, which offers fantastic trading opportunities. And online shoppers in Turkey also have a penchant for buying everything from books and clothing, to toys and cosmetics from international websites.
And with Turkey’s application for membership to the EU due for review in 2013, now could be a good time to start making inroads into what is a very lucrative market.
